project overview

Clients were looking to approach a small builder after past experiences building with housing companies. They liked Alex from day one with his open and honest approach to the build. They purchased a section in Whakatane with sea views hoping to build their forever home. They wanted an architectural looking house with a cladding that had easy maintenance.

The clients approached us through our website. They wanted an custom designed architectural house with low maintenance cladding. After some negative experiences with larger building companies they were keen to work with a small builder.

After an initial chat over the phone, we met at several sections they were considering buying. They eventually settled on a elevated coastal section with views out to Whale Island. We organised a meeting with an architect to start the design process, ensuring that the client's needs and goals were clearly noted.

After finalising the concept drawings and making a few small changes, we submitted the plans to the council. Six months later, we broke ground.

Architectural and design features

The house is built on a sloping section in the sand dunes, which required large concrete foundations and extensive block work. Once the footings were in and the block walls were up, we backfilled and prepped the foundation for the concrete slab.

The exterior features durable materials and finishes that complement the coastal environment. Inside, the design includes spacious living areas that maximise the use of natural light and coastal views. High-quality materials and finishes are used throughout, providing a blend of functionality and aesthetics. The layout is designed to cater to the needs of a growing family, with open-plan living areas and private spaces.

Unique elements

This home boasts Coloursteel architectural tray roofing and cladding, complemented by vertical Herpac cedar weatherboards. Notable elements include a meticulously crafted hit-and-miss cedar soffit area at the front entrance, angled walls, and a bespoke kitchen. Polished concrete spans the kitchen and living areas, adding a sleek touch.
